Overcoming pre-test nerves

Fear of test situations can affect many people, and can be very frustrating for them.  They may feel that while they are quite competent in the subject for which they are being tested, their nerves cause them to 'let themselves down'

Often, test nerves are caused by the fact that a lot of anxiety and stress regarding the test itself can build up in the days and weeks leading up to the test.  By the time of the test, a lot of fear of the test situation could have built up.

This can be true of any exam situation, but quite often is felt most strongly by those undergoing their driving test... waiting for the examiner to appear can just be too much for some people, and normally competen drivers can fail their test because of it.

What are the signs of pre-test nerves?

Here are some of the more common symptoms of pre-test nerves...

• A growing feeling of anxiety in the days and weeks leading up to the test
• A dry mouth... rumbling stomach... or worse!!!
• Quivering and weak voice in a spoken exam
• Inability to write because of shaking
• Staring at an exam paper... and not being able to think of a single answer!

Failing the exam, of course, only serves to reinforce the feelings the next time round.
