Paul's Answers...

I'm a bit nervous about hypnosis - Can you reassure me that it's ok?

Absolutely! - I specialise in helping those people who are nervous about undergoing hypnotherapy.  If you are thinking about hypnotherapy, but are uncertain what it's going to be like, then I invite you to come along for an initial session, not only to discuss your problem, but also to answer ANY questions you may have.

My relaxed, understanding approach will help to put you at your ease, and I am more than happy to answer any question about hypnosis, and how it is used in a therapeutic environment.

NO hypnosis will take place during this initial session, and having answered all your questions, I hope you'll see just how pleasant and relaxing it is, and we'll have helped remove a lot of the 'mystery' surrounding it.

If you would like to do this, please don't hesitate to book an initial consultation today.

How do suggestion hypnotherapy, and analytical hypnotherapy differ?

To use my favourite analogy of a house with a crack in the wall...  there are two ways of dealing with this.  One way is to paper over the cracks, and hope it goes away, and the other, is to check and reinforce the foundations of the house so that the problem is fixed once and for all.

I often use this analogy when explaining to clients the difference between the two kinds of hypnotherapy that I use.

Suggestion therapy is very effective for things like helping someone to stop smoking, or to stop biting their nails, but it would not be able to help someone who experiences panic attacks, or has a phobia for example.

For these people, analytical hypnotherapy would be used to find out what is causing that person's anxiety that is the root cause of their problem.  When the root cause has been removed, the problem effectively disappears, just like in that house, when the foundations have been strengthened.

Why should I see a hypnotherapist?

If you had a problem with your teeth, you would go to a dentist simply because he would be the best person to help you with the problem, if you had a problem with a car, you would take it to a mechanic for the same reason.

Put simply, a visit to a hypnotherapist can be looked at in the same way... if you have anxiety, or suffer from panic attacks or a phobia, then a hypnotherapist, particularly an analytical hypnotherapist, can very effectively help you with your problem.

Do I need a GP's referral?

No - G.P. referrals, although common, are not required.

Are any drugs used during the sessions?

No.

Is there an age limit for hypnotherapy?

It depends on the type of therapy.  For suggestion therapy, there is no age limit, as long as the person is old enough to understand what is happening and what is being said to them.

For analytical hypnotherapy, there isn't an upper age limit, but due to the nature of the therapy, it can't really be used on any person under the age of 21.

How many sessions does it take?

Again, it depends on the type of therapy.

Suggestion therapy can be done in as little as a single session, although quite often people book another session simply because they enjoyed the first one so much!

Analytical hypnotherapy can vary depending on the individual, but has a maximum of 12 sessions.

I've dieted in the past, but can't keep the weight off.  Can you help?

Yes.

The problem that many people have when they diet and then put the weight back on again, is that they haven't uncovered the reason that they overeat.

Overeating is often associated with some emotional issues that are still there after you have dieted, and it is these emotional issues which contribute so readily to putting the weight back on.

Using analytical hypnotherapy I can help you uncover the emotional issues which were producing this effect.

I’ve given up smoking before, but have gone back to it.  Can hypnosis change this?

Yes it can.

It all boils down to finding out why you have gone back to smoking in the past.  Often, people who stop smoking by willpower alone, experience problems like withdrawal symptoms and can even go back to smoking, simply because the reasons that they gave up for were not strong enough or tangible enough.

A large part of my smoking cessation session is devoted to exploring with the client their reasons for wanting to stop smoking, and explaining the potential pitfalls that might befall them if they were to stop smoking for those reasons.  We then go on to discover reasons for stopping smoking which are strong enough, and tangible enough.

The hypnotherapy part of the session, then goes on to reinforce these tangible reasons for being a non-smoker, and a the person leaves the session a non-smoker.

How will I feel after hypnotherapy?

After suggestion therapy, it's usual to feel a new level of enthusiasm towards life, towards your goals, and towards yourself and what you can achieve.

After analytical hypnotherapy, most people have a new outlook on life, having discovered something new about themselves that they didn't know before, enthusiastic about the future, and with a feeling of having an emotional 'weight lifted off of their shoulders'.

What things can analytical hypnotherapy help with?

There really are far too many to list, but it can be generalised as being any problem of emotional or psychological origin.

Most people who visit a hypnotherapist, do so either because they are doing something that they don't want to be doing, or that they are not doing something that they would like to do.

Hopefully, you'll be able to find specific information on the pages of this website, but if not please do contact me, and I'll be delighted to help.

Are the sessions confidential?

Absolutely! - None of your personal details will ever be passed on to anyone else, without for permission.

Strict confidentiality is a requirement of my professional associations.

I don't know if I'm going to feel a 'stigma' attached to therapy.

Some people tell me that they think they're going to feel 'a bit daft' telling me their problems...  what I tell them is that it's highly unlikely they're going to tell me anything I haven't heard before.

I don't 'judge' people on what they tell me, because I realise that the way people feel is almost always due to something that has happened to them in the past through no fault of their own.

If you feel uncomfortable about telling your friends, then don't tell them! - But remember, that one of the most useful things you can have is the support of others, so if you feel you can tell your friends, then do.

One vital thing to remember, is that you shouldn't feel 'silly' about seeing someone about your problems... instead you should feel very proud of yourself for having taken the first, very important step towards feeling better.

As part of my initial training, I underwent a full course of analytical hypnotherapy, and am not afraid to admit it!!!

How can I book?

To book an initial consultation, click here, or call me on 01354 696155:

How much does it cost?

It depends on the type of hypnotherapy I will be using, and which practice you would like to come to.  Full details of all of my fees can be found here

Hypnosis - What is it?

Hypnosis is very simply a very deep level of relaxation - nothing more, nothing less.

It is a state we all go through naturally, many times a day.  A hypnotherapist is simply someone who can 'induce' this state at a given time.

Hypnosis on it's own doesn't change things in people, it's just a 'tool' that can be used by a skilled hypnotherapist to bring about change when used in conjunction with other techniques.

Will I know what's happening?

Yes, you will.

You will still be able to hear, taste, smell, move, scratch, think and see (if you open your eyes!)

How does hypnosis feel?

There are two ways I like to explain what it feels like, although bear in mind that the way it feels will be very individual to you.

The first, is if you have been watching television, and suddenly, you realise that you haven't seen any of what's been going on for the last five minutes, because you've been thinking about something else, and just weren't concentrating on what you were watching.

The other way I like to explain it, is to think of a time where you've been so wrapped up in what you've been doing, that more time has passed than you thought... for example, you might think you've been reading for 30 minutes, only to look at the clock and see that you've actually been reading for an hour.

Hypnosis feels a bit like that.  It's quite common, if I ask a client how long they think they've been listening to my voice, that they will say 20 minutes, when actually it's been very nearly an hour!

Can I be made, under hypnosis, to do something against my will?

No - Your morals and conscious will are still there.  Some people feel concern about this if they have seen a stage hypnotist in the past, but that really is a completely different thing.

Am I going to be asleep?

Probably not.  -  As I've said in a previous question, hypnosis is not sleep, it's just a state of being extremely relaxed.  I say 'probably not' because some clients do find suggestion therapy so relaxing, that they just nod off !! - If they do, it doesn't matter, their subconscious mind will still be listening.

Will I remember the hypnosis part of the session?

Yes you will, although it will probably seem to have been a lot shorter time than it actually was.

Typically, someone who has been under hypnosis for 50 minutes will say that it felt like 20-30 minutes.

Can you hypnotise anyone?

Almost everyone can be hypnotised.

The only exception to this are those whose mental capacity is not up to imagining things, and this would mean an extremely low IQ.

I personally would not use hypnosis on anyone who was anyone who was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

How is it done?

Hypnosis is brought about by getting the person to imagine situations and events that are extremely relaxing.  The 'induction', as it is called, is simply a series of extremely carefully worded relaxation techniques.

Entering hypnosis is a skill that people find that they learn.  Someone who enters hypnosis during several sessions, finds it easier to relax into it each time.  After a while, you may well find that you are able to do it for yourself when you simply want to relax.

What if I can't be woken up?

You will - As I've said previously in other questions, you are still able think and react to situations while you are in hypnosis.

Can hypnosis reveal my intimate secrets?

Hypnosis cannot make you do anything that you wouldn't do at any other time.

What if I cancel my session?

Any appointments cancelled with less than 72 hours notice will be charged at the normal sessional fee, as your therapist's time and facilities will have been reserved for you.

For cancellations with greater than 72 hours notice, any fees already paid will be refunded, less a £12 administration charge.

And if I arrive late for my session?

If there is another client due for the following appointment, then the end time of the session will remain the same so that the next client's appointment still starts at the correct time.

If there isn't another client following, I will always try to be accommodating!
