Side effects to stopping smoking by willpower alone - Alcohol

What to expect if you stop smoking by willpower alone

Many people who stop smoking by willpower alone, report that drinking alcohol is one of the greatest ‘triggers’ for smoking.  Whenever they drink alcohol, they find that they want to smoke.

When to expect it

If you stop smoking by willpower alone, this can happen anytime when you are drinking alcohol, or are involved in a social situation where smoking and alcohol would have been linked in the past.

Why does it happen?

It’s our old friend, the ‘conditioned response’.  Many people have learned, through sheer habit, that, in their own mind at least, smoking and drinking are inexplicably linked.

What you can do to help yourself

There are two main things that you could do to help yourself.

  • Firstly, try to identify the situations where this ‘trigger’ could happen for you.  If you normally go to a certain pub, on a certain evening to meet your friends, maybe suggest to them that you meet somewhere else for a change, or you may find it easier to not meet up with friends who smoke at all, for a while.

    If you do go out and drink, change the drink that you have.  You may find that after years of smoking while drinking white wine for example, has conditioned you into wanting to smoke while drinking white wine… so change to red wine, beer, Irish cream… even soft drinks! - anything which helps you to break the cycle.

Why my clients find it easier

During your stop smoking hypnotherapy session, you will be asked about some of your major ‘triggers’, so that you can begin to build a picture in your mind of your old ‘trigger’ points… and when you have identified them, it makes it much easier to change your routine to avoid these situations.

The 'need' to smoke comes from the individual's subconscious mind, weighing up the benefits of smoking, against the benefits of not smoking

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session sets about to change the subconscious balance, so that the person has no desire to smoke, because their subconscious mind finds that the benefits of not smoking, greatly outweigh the 'benefits' of smoking.

When this process happens, the mechanisms supporting these 'withdrawal symptoms' are no longer there.
