Side effects to stopping smoking by willpower alone - Depression

What to expect if you stop smoking by willpower alone

Someone who has stopped smoking by willpower alone, might feel depressed, or ‘low’.

When to expect it

For those who stop smoking by willpower alone, this can happen at any time.

Why does it happen?

When someone stops smoking by willpower alone, they often do so because they have decided consciously, that they want to stop smoking.  Unfortunately, the reasons why they decided to stop, are often not enough to convince the subconscious mind that it was a good idea! - So, at least until the subconscious mind 'catches up' of it's own accord (which I might never do), there is a discrepancy between what the conscious mind thinks, and what the subconscious mind feels.  It's called 'cognitive dissonance'.

It all boils down to the fact that the motivation to stop smoking isn't strong enough to overcome the desire to smoke.

It may be, of course, that you had simply been using smoking as a ‘crutch’ to help with feelings of depression that you had before you started smoking.

What you can do to help yourself

There are two main things that you can do...

  • Remember that if you were to have a cigarette, that this would actually depress you more, because you would feel that you had broken your resolve.

    Work out how much money you are saving by not smoking, and go out and treat yourself to something with this money. 
     
  • You could consider a session of stop smoking hypnotherapy with me!

Why my clients find it easier

The 'need' to smoke comes from the individual's subconscious mind, weighing up the benefits of smoking, against the benefits of not smoking. 

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session sets about to change the subconscious balance, so that the person has no desire to smoke, because their subconscious mind finds that the benefits of not smoking, greatly outweigh the 'benefits' of smoking.

When this process happens, the mechanisms supporting these 'withdrawal symptoms' are no longer there.
