Side effects to stopping smoking by willpower alone - Relaxation

What to expect if you stop smoking by willpower alone

Someone who tries to stop smoking by willpower alone, may find it difficult when they come to unwind at the end of the day, or at break-times at work, when they feel the need to have a cigarette in order to ‘calm their nerves’

When to expect it

If someone has tried to stop smoking by willpower alone, they may find themselves having difficulty relaxing, mostly within the first week or two, but often it may last a month or more.

Why does it happen?

Over their years of smoking, their mind has formed a link between relaxing, and smoking

So when they are in this particular situation, the link triggers a desire to smoke.

It happens because they have got into the habit of smoking when they want to relax.  Over the years that they have been smoking, the time for relaxation has become ingrained in their mind as a ‘trigger’ for smoking.  

Over the years, smokers build up a lot of ‘trigger’ points, so that they have a sufficient number of opportunities to smoke in a day.

What you can do to help yourself

The secret here, is to find alternative ways of relaxing, and keep these going until such time as the habit has diminished.  There are two ways of doing this.

  • Change your routine… if you always do the same sorts of things after work, change them… join a gym, go swimming, walk instead of driving home, that sort of thing… anything that breaks the habit cycle.
  • Consider a smoking cessation session with me.   Because I understand the mechanisms behind these feelings, they can be dealt with.  If you are finding it difficult to relax, it simply means that you are fighting against some very ingrained habits that you have developed over years of smoking, and this is something that I can help with.

Why my clients find it easier

During my smoking cessation session, we identify with the client what are the real reasons that they smoke, and what tangible benefit they could be given for giving up.  ‘Smoking for relaxation’ is one of the many things that my stop smoking hypnotherapy sessions deal with, by giving the unconscious mind suggestions that will ensure that you are able to relax naturally. 

The 'need' to smoke comes from the individual's subconscious mind, weighing up the benefits of smoking, against the benefits of not smoking. 

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session sets about to change the subconscious balance, so that the person has no desire to smoke, because their subconscious mind finds that the benefits of not smoking, greatly outweigh the 'benefits' of smoking.

When this process happens, the mechanisms supporting these 'withdrawal symptoms' are no longer there.
