Side effects to stopping smoking by willpower alone - Telephone Calls

What to expect if you stop smoking by willpower alone

Someone who tries to stop smoking by willpower alone, may find that things like talking on the telephone will make them want to smoke.

When to expect it

If someone has tried to stop smoking by willpower alone, may find themselves wanting to smoke whenever they speak on the telephone in places (such as at home) where they can smoke.

Why does it happen?

Over their years of smoking, their mind has formed a link between talking on the telephone, and smoking.  So when they are in this particular situation, the link triggers a desire to smoke.

Over the years, their mind will have made as many links as it can between situations or event, and smoking.  Smokers do this subconsciously so that they have a sufficient number of ‘reasons’ to smoke to satisfy their desires.

What you can do to help yourself

What you do to help: There are two main things that you can do.

  • Make it impossible to smoke while on the phone.  Remove all ashtrays, cigarettes, matches etc. from near where the ‘phone is.  Try to occupy your hands while talking on the phone, by doodling or something similar.
  • You could consider a session of quit smoking hypnotherapy with me! - See below for an explanation of why this will help.

Why my clients find it easier

The reason that this can be difficult for people who stop smoking by willpower alone, is that they are trying not to smoke by conscious willpower.

When the conscious mind is occupied by something like having a conversation on the phone, the subconscious mind is more free to do what it like, and willpower doesn’t effect the subconscious mind, so the desire to smoke once again raises it’s head.

Once they have thought about it, they begin to build a desire to smoke, which builds and builds until they cannot help themselves, and they (eventually) give into their temptation.

The difference for clients who have been through my quit smoking hypnotherapy session is that they won’t necessarily even think about the act of smoking in the first place… with the originating thought removed, the desire to smoke cannot build, and so the person is no longer trying not to smoke, they don’t even think about it.

Think about a life-long non-smoker… they don’t find it difficult not to smoke… it simply doesn’t occur to them in the first place.
