Side effects to stopping smoking by willpower alone - The Morning Cigarette

What to expect if you stop smoking by willpower alone

Someone who tries to stop smoking by willpower alone, may find that the habit of smoking a cigarette first thing in the morning makes them think of smoking, and desire to smoke.

When to expect it

If someone has tried to stop smoking by willpower alone, may find themselves desiring their morning cigarette for the first few weeks after stopping smoking, at the time in the morning when they used to have their first cigarette.

Why does it happen?

Over their years of smoking, their mind has formed a link between getting up in the morning, and smoking.  So when they are in this particular situation, the link triggers a desire to smoke.

Smokers get into the habit of smoking at certain times.  The reason they do this, whether they admit it or not, is because they find as many reasons as they can to smoke… and ‘oh, I simply must have one first thing in the morning, to set me up for the day’ is one of them.

What you can do to help yourself

There are two main things that you can do to help yourself...

  • Change your morning routine...  Up until now, smoking has just been part of the usual morning routine… it might have been… get up… clean teeth, shower, get dressed, go downstairs, put the kettle on, light a cigarette while waiting for the kettle to boil. 

    The secret here is to change the routine…   In this case for example (where the morning cigarette is smoked waiting for the kettle to boil), would be get up, shower, get dressed, go downstairs, put the kettle on, and then go back upstairs and clean your teeth while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil.  This way you’ve broken the routine, and you’ll find things a lot easier.

Why my clients find it easier

The 'need' to smoke comes from the individual's subconscious mind, weighing up the benefits of smoking, against the benefits of not smoking

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session sets about to change the subconscious balance, so that the person has no desire to smoke, because their subconscious mind finds that the benefits of not smoking, greatly outweigh the 'benefits' of smoking.

When this process happens, the mechanisms supporting these 'withdrawal symptoms' are no longer there.
