Side effects to stopping smoking by willpower alone - Weight Gain

What to expect if you stop smoking by willpower alone

Someone who tries to stop smoking by willpower alone, may find that they put on weight after they stop smoking.

When to expect it

If someone has tried to stop smoking by willpower alone, they may find that they eat in situations where they would normally have had a cigarette

Why does it happen?

It's all to do with a psychological phenomena known as 'oral compulsion'.  Essentially, it is the desire to 'pacify' ones-self by putting something in your mouth.  This oral compulsion, is one of the biggest factors that cause people to smoke.

When someone stops smoking by willpower alone, they can often find that they substitute this need to oral comfort, so they eat more sweets, cakes etc.

Finally, when you stop smoking, your food simply tastes better!

What you can do to help yourself

An important thing to remember here, is that on average, someone who gains weight after stopping smoking, will typically gain around 5 pounds… and the health benefits of stopping smoking, far outweigh any potential health problems caused by gaining 5 pounds.

Also, it’s important to remember that the person is usually perfectly capable of taking those few pounds back off again.

There are two main things that you can do to help yourself...

  • As for what to do about the need to put something in your mouth, well just a bit of common sense really, eat fruit, chew some sugar free gum, drink plenty of water, and buy yourself something nice with the money you save, like a theatre or concert ticket, for example.

  • You could consider a session of stop smoking hypnotherapy with me! - See below for an explanation.

Why my clients find it easier

Symptom substitution’ is a well known psychological phenomena, and is dealt with in the hypnotic suggestions within the session itself.

The 'need' to smoke comes from the individual's subconscious mind, weighing up the benefits of smoking, against the benefits of not smoking

The stop smoking hypnotherapy session sets about to change the subconscious balance, so that the person has no desire to smoke, because their subconscious mind finds that the benefits of not smoking, greatly outweigh the 'benefits' of smoking.

When this process happens, the mechanisms supporting these 'withdrawal symptoms' are no longer there.
